Trends We Are Noticing February 2018

This is our monthly update to our extended Association for Creative Industries (AFCI); a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.
Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the AFCI membership email.

Here are our latest observations:

“Having just returned from Phoenix and the AFCI Mega show and Tucson for the bead shows I have lots of inspiration for spring/summer.  I took a quick look at the pictures I took and clearly I am attracted to anything that is beaded, embroidered and floral.  Happily, I am seeing many embroidery, sewing and string art kits, floral shaped dies cuts and new techniques to make paper flowers.  The spring haute couture and the current Fall RTW runways are filled with embroidery, unique one of kind fabrics and more florals that I have seen for Fall in a while.  Full bouquets scattered on dresses, skirts and jackets.  I am also observing transparent chiffons and similar materials being draped on top of other materials creating dreamy and soft silhouettes.  This is easily replicated in paper arts with transparencies and other light weight paper.”

“Ruffles on women's clothing.  It's like a kick back to the 80's when you had the big puffy collars and sleeves with ruffles.  I'm seeing them though, in a softer way.  They are draping on fabric more and don't look so stiff.”

“Glitter!! The trend is glitter! It's on note cards and clothes, home decor and cell phone covers. It's in makeup. It's everywhere!”

“My personal take on the trends in paper craft is a definite move away from “Project Life” (organized scrapbooking in pocket pages) towards single-photo layouts with lots of mixed media incorporated.  Planners, art and bullet journaling are in the forefront too.
Also - move over unicorns, your time is done.  Hello llamas!  (I’m seeing llamas in everything from yarn to pine cones.  I expect LOTS of llama stamp and die sets this summer!”
Emma Ivemey
Secretary, AFCI Canada Chapter

“Lettering art, Instagram hashtag art challenges (daily, weekly, monthly), pouring art (which I'm already sick of), alcohol inks on Yupo.”
Lisa Fulmer

“Walking the gemshows in Tucson I saw tons of stones and glass trimmed in different metal finishes. And geometric-meets-organic shapes, like pendants with stones trimmed in silver, but framed in round or geometric shapes, very minimal.”
Candie Cooper
Author and Designer

“Pins and badges are making a come-back. Whether for making a statement or just to wear as a fashion statement, people are collecting them and putting them on bags, denim jackets and hats.”
Kelly Panacci
Art Licensor and Founder of Kelly Panacci Inc.

“Llama, Llama, Llama....Llamas are taking over in every industry. Did you know the 80s are back? From fashion to crafts, the 80s are hotter than ever.  There's no stopping Pom Poms and Tassels either. This dynamic duo is still on trend.”
