Trends We are Noticing March 2017

This is our monthly update to our extended Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.

Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the CHA membership email.

Here are our latest observations:

“My own work is heavily influenced by runway shows and last month there were so many to review for Fall 2017.  I saw a lot of red but I also spotted a dark orange, almost a rust color appearing as an accent in many collections.  Uniquely joined fabrics in the form of unusual cuts were evident and it made me think of crazy quilting.  Fiber embellishment is everywhere and it is often purposefully messy.  Big flowers continue to be shown.  Tassels are far from over.
I would also add not to miss out on Beauty and the Beast styling.  Expect tree branch components to appear in more jewelry designs along with roses and cloche jars.”

“Time to lighten up with the change of season.   Watercolor washes and pastel stones with gold are popping up for spring. Simple and sweet illustrations of botanicals too.”
Candie Cooper
Author and Designer

“I see women wearing knee-length, flared skirts with strappy heels and sandals.  The colors may be muted, but the patterns can be a little crazy.  It's a feminine look, but very professional as well.”

“Lately we've seem how succulents of all varieties and in all types of vessels have dominated the floral departments, but now I'm also seeing them and cactus too in print, posters, stationary and wall paper. It's a trend that has legs and will be around for a while.”
Kelly Panacci
Art Licensor and Founder of Kelly Panacci Inc.

“Trends this summer look to be lighthouses and mermaids! We are also loving and seeing Paisley everywhere!”
Laura J Weed

“Texture! Lumpy bumby dimension is hot! From 3D paper pieced embellishments to glitter to sand/shells and stone to texture created with modeling paste. Scrapbookers are adding it to pages, card makers are making their designs POP and artists are making it a given in art journal pages, collages and assemblages.”
Joe Rotella

“The trend  I see everywhere, tassels! Little tassels on earrings, necklaces, key chains to oversize tassels on purses, pillows, blankets and chairs. They are in a variety of materials from fine shiny threads to DIY chunky yarns and are fashioned from a colorful palette.”
Debra Quartermain
Design & Social Media

“Lots and lots of embroidery.   It's on clothes, jewelry, home decor, it's everywhere. Think embroidered flannels, jeans, jackets and paired with textile bags, bolder tassel and fringe jewelry.  Very global, a textile bazaar.”
Lisa Kettell
Chief Designer for LK Designs

"I see a lot of billowy sleeves on blouses & T-shirts. The billow is shown from the elbow down."
Suze Weinberg, Designer

“Pineapples!!! Everywhere I look they are popping up. I'm including a photo of some lovely pineapple jewelry from Banana Republic that caught my eye last night. -- I want the earrings!”
