Trends We Are Noticing February 2017

This is an  update for our extended Association for Creative Industries AFCI (formerly Craft & Hobby Association) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.

Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the AFCI membership email.

Here are our latest observations:

“Resistance imagery will be everywhere as people take personal stands on many different issues.  They will wear their opinions through textiles and jewelry featuring words and symbols.   The trends I am also picking up include unusual mix and matching.  Wood and crystal, feathers and wool, metal and glass.  Designers are gathering different fibers and surfaces and joining them.”
Carmi Cimicata
Social Media Manager for John Bead Corp. and ILOVERESIN.com

"I am seeing women go crazy with coloring their hair!  Blues, pinks, yellows, greens.  And it's not age dependent either.  All age ranges are doing this!"
Katherine Swift
Owner, Resin Obsession, LLC

“No longer confined to your Granny's sitting room, needle arts including embroidery and crochet are huge right now. I am seeing lots of both in the fashion and home decor markets.”
Kelly Panacci
Art Licensor and Founder of Kelly Panacci Inc.

“Here's what I spotted at AFCI: Succulents in all forms, planners and accessories, and fairy gardens. On line, I am seeing a growing interest in Junk Journals- these are journals that you can add almost anything to- junk mail envelopes, tea dyed scrap paper pages, ephemera of all kinds tucked in everywhere- and no need to be neat about it!”
Eileen Hull
Author, Artist and Adventurer
Licensed Designer for Sizzix and Clearsnap

“Pom poms & tassels have hit a huge trend. Recently noticed a huge display of all different kinds of scarves, pocketbooks, summer hats,  and jewelry at Nordstrom's featuring pom-poms tassels and dots. Anxious to see how many people pick up on it!”
Suze Weinberg
Suze Weinberg Designs

“Patches, patches and patches.  Embroidered motifs/applications on clothing... H&M, Zara, J Crew, River Island, TopMan - men and women's collections feature it on their clothing.”
Fernando DaSilva
Creative Director for John Bead Corp

“What hasn't been covered much until now, which actually really surprises me, is the popularity of Cosplay and it's continued increase in popularity.”
Roberta Birbaum
President, AFCI Canada

“I feel like metallics and bright colors are both on going trends with interesting twists. I saw a lot of bright jewel tone colors, but this time they have special finishes like pearl, Frost, or hammered metal. Even iridescent jewel tones! And of course foils are still going strong!”
Jenny Barnett Rohrs
Television Host (TV Host) at Hands On Crafts for Kids
Free Lance Craftista... at Craft Test Dummies

“I’m seeing Rose Gold still continuing as a huge trend. And more and more products with metallic accents in every color, especially papers, embossing powders, ribbons, etc. It’s very exciting and very shiny!!”
Laura J Weed
Graphics Manager, Social Media Marketing Manager, Website Administrator, Design Team Manager for Stampendous

“Gold, gold and more gold. Gold with pink for a pretty girly look, gold with black typography and or quotes for a trendy contrast, gold mixed with florals for a sophisticated wedding décor.”
