Trends We Are Noticing Year End 2016

This is our monthly update to our extended Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.

Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the CHA membership email.    We had a short break this summer and we are now back and thinking about Fall/Winter.

Here is my submission:

“I am starting to see less interest in company logos and markings on products.  I believe people are looking for unique items that do not necessarily tie them to a brand logo. Personalizing allows the consumer to create their own brand."
Carmi Cimicata
Social Media Manager for John Bead Corp. and ILOVERESIN.com

Here are the trends everyone else noticed:

People are combining colors from opposite ends of the color wheel in the same resin castings to create dramatic effects such as swirls, stripes and large bubbles of color."

Acrylic! Many artists and crafters are experimenting with acrylic - especially clear acrylic. People are decorating blanks to make everything from key chains to cell phone holders. Artists are reverse painting and collaging for a really cool effect. All the look of glass, but lightweight and easy to cut!"
Joe Rotella

“Embroidery of every kind. Sequins, rhinestones and dazzling patches are dressing up fashion, accessories and home decor. Watch these details jazz up satin jackets and jewelry chokers. This trend is getting hotter by the days. Look for more bold embellishments, ornate textiles and global prints."

Hand rolled and felted balls are soft, colorful and fun and they're everywhere right now. I've seen them on garlands, wreaths, baby mobiles, brooches, necklaces and if you have hundreds of them you could even make a rug. The great thing about this craft is even kids can make these soft mini balls and you need only wool roving, water and dish soap.

"Red buffalo check on fabric, clothing and Christmas stockings, all shades of gold especially rose gold, 3D houses, felt animals and vintage ornaments in lighter colors, along with metallics, glitter and sequins in seasonal decor."
Eileen Hull
Author, Artist and Adventurer
Licensed Designer for Sizzix and Clearsnap

I see two trends:  At many jewelry counters the trend now seems to be leaning toward a simplistic gold chain or thin ring band with just a stone or gold bar as the "embellishment." Second, I love the old fashion floral prints that are showing up on shoes, sneakers, boots, dress shoes, rain boots, and the like. Roses especially. I already own several pairs myself !

Plastic will be huge on shoes and purses. Feathers will hit the streets in the format of long earrings and dream catchers. Bracelets with ribbons and crystals will also be a hit taking us to a Moulin Rouge era.  Jump suits will be all over the place for SS/2017."
