Trends We are Noticing - September 2016

This is our monthly update to our extended Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.

Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the CHA membership email.

Here is my submission:

“The trends I am noticing for Autumn are influenced by the news and runway.  The death of David Bowie has been reflected by the return of his iconic zig zag arrow.  This month the spring shows featured many unique asymmetrical shapes.  I also see a lot of graffiti style printing on fabrics that are reminiscent of the 80's.  I imagine that many adults will dress like political personalities and superheroes for Halloween parties this year."

Here are the trends everyone else noticed:

"Halloween costumes with face painting using stencils and pattern.  Lots of rainbows and airbrushing..."

"This time of year, I always see people making adornments to go on their Halloween costumes.  DIY gemstones are always big, followed by emblems and shields."

"DIY d├ęcor for these two upcoming holidays seems to include WREATHS, WREATHS, WREATHS! I’m seeing scary, fun, popular characters, and just seasonal looks show up everywhere in wreaths for doors, walls, mantles, even hall tables."

"Fashion is the first trend to watch - what you see on the runway will eventually make its way to the living room. Some of the trends that were forefront in this year's fashion shows were animal prints, metallics, beading, fur, ruffles, pattern mixes and the color pink. These are the elements to watch for in the coming Fall season and into 2017."

"Jewelry Trend: Chokers or dog collars - from Moulin Rouge to Dominatrix style."
Fernando DaSilva
Creative Director & Product Development for John Bead Corp

"Lots of galaxy aqua, blue, purple and fierce magenta are making their way to Halloween decor this year.   A big movement growing stronger each season is the Teal Pumpkin Project! Teal is the color for food-allergen awareness. Putting this color pumpkin outside your house tells trick or treaters you are an allergy free zone."
