End of Summer 2016 - Trends We Are Noticing

This is our monthly update to our extended Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.

Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the CHA membership email.    We had a short break this summer and we are now back and thinking about Fall/Winter.

Here is my submission:

“The trends I am noticing this summer stem from the runway.  Embroidery is everywhere and floral patterns look wonderful when stitched onto all types of fabrics.  One of kind screen-printed fabrics continue to be used and they often feature the artwork of established artists.  Both of these trends can be utilized by crafters using DIY tools, paper and home printers.”

Here are the trends everyone else noticed:

“Large bib necklace pieces with fringe elements, warm golds and shades of mustard escort us into Fall 2016.”
Candie Cooper
Author and Designer

“I see the color teal has grown trendy.  Even shades of peacock blue to ocean blue have become popular for use in resin jewelry.”
Katherine Swift
Owner, Resin Obsession, LLC

“Still seeing lots of mosaics and more and more and more stencils!!”
Laura J Weed
Graphics Manager, Social Media Marketing Manager, Website Administrator, Design Team Manager for Stampendous

“Anything that looks organic! Things that use a color palette you would find in nature. Natural textures like leather, moss and stone. Earthy. Peaceful. Tranquil.”
Joe Rotella

“The 80s scene is back. As we approach Autumn this trend will become even hotter. From geometric shapes, sticker pop art and crazy prints mixed with a kaleidoscope of color, this trend is everywhere.
Expect to find it in crafts, fashion and home decor. Warmer colors will merge this trend into the fall season!”
Lisa Kettell
Chief Designer for LK Designs

“Over the summer you likely saw giant flamingo pool toys popping up in your social media channels. Following on the heels of that, flamingos continue to occupy centre stage as icons in home decor, stationery, wallpaper and clothing. Will flamingos be the next feathered friends to replace the ever-popular owl? Only time will tell.”

The enormously popular owl trend is a result of Harry Potter movies. It is unlikely that flamingos will reach that level of popularity without a really big pop culture hit. There is also a huge variety of colors, types, features that owls have while flamingos are pretty "standard". Flamingos are sort of stereotyped as a summer or beach image so it's doubtful they will reach trend status the way owls have.
