May 2016 Trends We Are Noticing

This is our monthly update to our extended Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.

Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the CHA membership email.

We’ll be taking a summer hiatus and will return again in September.

Here is my submission:

“While the tribal/ethnic trend continues I am seeing shells being added to this trend now.  Big beads, wood components, wrapped fibers and metals all appear in this group and the addition of small shells compliments them beautifully.”

Here are the trends everyone else noticed:

“Right now "having the blues" are a good thing!  Indigo tie-dyed fabrics and blue shades are EVERYWHERE and make for an intriguing yet calming environment.”
Candie Cooper
Author and Designer

“The latest trend I see for resin is creating resin paintings.  Artists are turning poured resin into beautiful waves, bubbles and other effects to create unique works of art on canvases and art boards.”
Katherine Swift
Owner, Resin Obsession, LLC

“My goodness, several trends seem to be popping up. I’m seeing mismatched earrings joining the long-standing trend of mismatched socks and accent nails. I’m seeing all sorts of fun trends in fabrics as more and more “character” fabrics become available and cosplay takes over the world. The costume section of the pattern books is now upward of 30 pages! Folks just seem to be having so much creative fun, completely ignoring more traditional and typical trends.”

  • 3D flowers for home decor, wedding, cards, jewelry and hair accessories
  • water color in art journals, card backgrounds and three dimensional projects
  • Macramé
  • Tassels

“Splashes of color, abstract images, stamps, collage, journaling and more come together in Art Journals - a great place to experiment, practice, capture thoughts, document feelings and emotions and just play. They have been the hot craft for a while and the boom continues! Variations include bible journaling and travel journals. Pick up a book, start to play and enter the world of Art Journals!”
Joe Rotella
“First there were succulents, then large tropical leafs, then a short love affair with the pineapple - but now the home decor train is moving on to cactus - or cacti. I'm seeing cactus plants, sure, but also cactus shaped pastries like cookies, painted cactus rocks, crochet cactus, cactus wall art, toss pillows, wallpaper and fabrics. Just like with the succulent trend, the pot it is planted in is nearly as important as the cactus plant itself. Don't worry, the succulent trend isn't going away any time soon and it's super easy to add a pot of cactus (or three) to the shelf alongside the succulents."

“Jewelry: lockets on women and men jewelry.
Gold statement necklaces.”
Fernando DaSilva
Creative Director for John Bead Corp

“In fashion you've got ....the color peach.  Tassels, still a huge trend, especially in jewelry, but also on purses and jackets. And, there are sneakers with all types of fantastic prints, as well as platform sneakers. Add in the hot trend of Crop tops and the now popular "cold shoulder" tops.  But still...heading the list in crafts....more and more and more adult coloring books !!!”
