April 2016 Trends We Are Noticing

This is our monthly report to our extended Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.

Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the CHA membership email.

Here is my submission:

"This month I am seeing a return to small seed bead designs.  I have noticed many tiny rows of beads on bangles and scattered throughout fibre-focussed wearables.  A few seed beads are hard to notice, but many, grouped in shapes and colors, result in spectacular finished looks.  On a totally different front, I am back from a trip to France where I saw Terrariums everywhere.  Tiny gardens in a jar.  I can see this exploding in North America again.”

Here are the trends everyone else noticed:

“I don't care what Pantone says is the color of the year, everyone is recreating lavender!   Mixed resin colors, glitter, paper cut outs -- I'm seeing lavender everywhere.”

I am in the middle of a road trip- I am noticing larger than life letters made of metal, wood, with lights, without lights, painted, etc. used as home decor. There are also a lot of retro camper themed items- seen not only in craft stores but in gift shops like Cracker Barrel. In independent craft stores- lots of inks, stencils, charms and embellishments to be used for art journaling.”

“This summer's jewelry trend is large polished stones or other boho style pendants on a piece of thin silk cord. Stone meaning and symbolism add to these simple necklaces.”

“In the stamping world this spring we’re seeing sort of a “non-trend” where folks are really focused on the tried and true best-sellers. Our nautical and ocean themed stamps are flying off the shelves for summer, while butterflies, cats and fairy garden themes are still holding very strong for Spring. Mushrooms seem to be very popular this year, and we’re seeing them in all shapes and sizes along with the all-season trend in owls continuing strong.”

In home decor I'm seeing plants everywhere. Everything from succulents to large tropicals. Trailing vines and tallish trees. Not only real plants but leaves and flowers on pillows, wallpaper and decorative accents. Prints of tropical foliage on the walls, toss pillows with a combination of flowers and leaves and some of the grandest scale wallpaper motifs I've ever seen. The look is lush, green and warm.”

“Stripes...they are all over...maybe because of sailors and the famous Chanel blouse being inspired by them, or maybe because its 'nautical' season.  Stripes come in bold colors and widths and colors.  Avoid the horizontal ones if you are a little bit overweight because those make you appear bigger.
Also, Black and White accessories and clothing with a small hint of topaz or light rose gold.  Killer summer 2016 look.”

“Calligraphy is the new cool! Beautiful handwriting is a great way to add charm to your craft projects, whether it's in a journal or a handmade card. If you're looking for inspiration, it's just a click away on Pinterest or Instagram.
