This is our monthly update to our extended Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) family; a more focused lens directed on what is topical and trending.
Each month I ask a group made up of designers, educators, authors and others to share their observations of trends that relate to our industry. I assemble the content and share it via my blog and through the CHA membership email.
Here are the June 2015 submissions:
“I am seeing patterns from both South American and African cultures being incorporated into new designer label clothing and fabric designs. These unique styles of embroidery, pattern and colors have me reviewing my own stash of items for components that are more earthy, natural and exotic.”
Social Media Manager for John Bead Corp and ILOVERESIN.com
“Art is slowly starting to be influenced by the 80’s and 90’s – think early computer graphics (e.g., 8 bit computer graphic images map perfectly to Perler Beads!), iconic brand motifs and Windows 95. Sure, the 50’s and 60’s and “vintage” (from Boomers' perspective) will still be present, but as Gen X & Gen Y ages, the 80’s and 90’s is their vintage.”
CMO (Delphia Consulting),Founder (Create N Craft), Overall Crafty Guy
“A trend I'm noticing lately is watercolor. Watercolor for crafts, wall art and even high-end decorator fabrics. Watercolor is soft, organic and artsy and fits in perfectly with the on-going bohemian trend as well as many other styles. “
The Creative Goddess - Delight in a creative life!
"Jewelry with a warm, gold tone is making a comeback. Anything from a base metal brass to the rich color of gold plated jewelry is 'in' for summer."

“Text continues to be a huge trend in many areas within the worlds of art and craft. While it continues to be used to convey a sentiment or message, it has of late been used simply as a design element as well.”
The Altered Page
“Very big on the Nordstrom scene these days are the Jacquard, Native American type prints and FRINGE still making a very strong impact!”
Suze Weinberg Designs
“I am seeing marquee letters and signs everywhere. The Industrial/Vintage inspired letters may have gained fame on Broadway originally, but now they're popping up in wedding venues, living rooms and kids rooms too. You can buy pre-made signs complete with LED lights or you can make your own. There are lots of tutorials available online to guide you through the DIY process of creating your own bold and fun statement pieces.”
Art Licensor and Founder of Kelly Panacci Inc.
“Druzy stones are hotter then ever and popping up everywhere from clothing stores to craft stores. Druzy quartz stones are made up of tiny crystals set over a main stone and wrapped in gilded gold or silver. These dazzling quartz beauties are mixed with metals, stones and rhinestones to form bracelets and necklaces. Be on the look out for druzy's this summer, they are hot!”
